Gwyneth Paltrow recently opened up about filming intimate scenes with Timothée Chalamet in the upcoming movie Marty Supreme and how she handled working with an intimacy coordinator.
A Playful Dynamic on Set
Paltrow, 52, joked about the age gap between herself and Chalamet, 29, saying, “I was like, ‘Okay, great. I’m 109 years old. You’re 14.’” The two star in Marty Supreme, directed by Josh Safdie, a film loosely inspired by table tennis champion Martin “Marty” Reisman. Buzz about their on-screen chemistry grew after paparazzi captured them kissing in character while filming in New York last October.
A Role Filled with Passion
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Paltrow shared details about her character, who is married to a powerful figure in the “Ping-Pong mafia” and finds herself entangled with Chalamet’s Marty. “She’s had a tough life, and he breathes life back into her, but it’s kind of transactional for them both,” she explained. This dynamic plays out through numerous intimate scenes. “There’s a lot—a lot of sex in this movie,” she added.
A Shift in Industry Standards
As a prominent voice in the #MeToo movement, Paltrow acknowledged the rise of intimacy coordinators but admitted she had difficulty adjusting to their presence. “There’s now something called an intimacy coordinator, which I did not know existed,” she said.
When the coordinator asked if she was comfortable with certain interactions, Paltrow recalled, “I was like, ‘Girl, I’m from the era where you get naked, you get in bed, the camera’s on.’” She and Chalamet eventually told the coordinator, “I think we’re good. You can step a little bit back.”
While she understands the value of intimacy coordination for younger actors, Paltrow admitted she would feel “very stifled” by having every move directed.
Praising Her Co-Star
Paltrow had nothing but praise for Chalamet, who joins a long list of her on-screen leading men, including Brad Pitt, Jude Law, Matt Damon, and Robert Downey Jr.
