Doug Kiker, a former contestant on “American Idol,” was admitted to the hospital just days prior to his passing, following a call to emergency services made by a concerned bystander who noticed the singer appearing unwell on a street in Denver.
The individual, perceiving that Kiker might be suffering from a drug overdose, promptly contacted 911, as reported by TMZ. Kiker, affectionately known as “The Singing Garbage Man” from his time on the show, passed away on Monday at the age of 32, a fact confirmed by his sister, Angela Evans, in an emotional post on Facebook.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of my brother Douglas Kiker. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by many. You are now singing with the angels, Bubba. Please keep our family in your prayers during this incredibly challenging time,” she wrote.
The Denver Medical Examiner’s Office has stated that the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Kiker’s death is ongoing. According to sources cited by TMZ, it is alleged that drugs may have led to a heart attack, which necessitated his transport to Denver Health Medical Center by emergency medical services. Kiker remained hospitalized for five days before succumbing to his condition.
In light of these events, a GoFundMe campaign established by his family to assist with funeral costs has already exceeded its target of $4,500. Valerie Cook, Kiker’s former fiancée, expressed her heartbreak over the loss of their children’s father in statements to TMZ.
In a heartfelt message shared on Wednesday, Kiker’s brother conveyed his grief: “Dear brother, I want you to know that no matter where you are, you will always remain my baby brother. I find solace in knowing you are finally at peace; however, I wish we had more time together. Until we meet again, please say hello to Bubba for me and let him know I love him. Rest in peace, Douglas Kiker, my baby brother.”
Kiker auditioned for Season 18 of “American Idol” in 2019, performing “Bless the Broken Road” while Luke Bryan accompanied him on piano. Although he advanced to Hollywood, he did not progress further in the competition. When questioned by judge Lionel Richie about his previous performing experience, Kiker candidly admitted he had none, prompting Ryan Seacrest to take him outside to practice in front of a crowd.
During his final performance on the show, he sang Marvin Gaye’s classic “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”
