Disney and Pixar are heading back to the Land of the Dead! CEO Bob Iger has officially announced Coco 2, with a theatrical release slated for 2029.
The sequel is still in early development, and while plot details remain under wraps, Iger teased that the film will be filled with “humor, heart, and adventure.”
Returning to helm the project are Coco director Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina, with Pixar veteran Mark Nielsen (Toy Story 4, Inside Out 2) set to produce.
A Legacy of Music and Magic
The original Coco (2017) was a cultural phenomenon, earning two Academy Awards—Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for Remember Me. The film followed 12-year-old Miguel, a young musician who defied his family’s long-standing ban on music and embarked on a breathtaking journey through the Land of the Dead to uncover his ancestors’ true story.
Grossing over $800 million worldwide, Coco became a beloved classic, praised for its heartfelt storytelling and rich depiction of Mexican culture.
Pixar’s Sequel Strategy Continues
Disney and Pixar have leaned heavily into sequels in recent years, with massive hits like Inside Out 2 ($1.66 billion) and Incredibles 2 ($1.24 billion). The announcement of Coco 2 joins a lineup of upcoming follow-ups, including Toy Story 5 and Incredibles 3, alongside new original projects like Elio and Hoppers.
With Coco 2 officially in the works, fans can look forward to another visually stunning and emotionally resonant journey when it hits theaters in 2029.
