Just before 3 a.m. on Saturday, a Texas patrol deputy spotted a vehicle blocking the road in Dickinson. As the deputy approached, a man suddenly jumped out of the car and ran.
Around the same time, Dickinson Police issued a burglary alert for a suspect matching the man’s description. Deputies quickly established a perimeter and arrested 35-year-old Sylvester Thompson, charging him with evading arrest.
Daring Escape from Patrol Car
While being transported to Galveston County Jail, Thompson managed to maneuver his handcuffs from behind his back to the front. Incredibly, he rolled down the patrol car’s window and leaped out—all while the vehicle was still in motion!
Struggle Injures Deputy
The chase continued onto IH-45, where Thompson fought with deputies, assaulting one and attempting to grab his weapon before fleeing again. The injured deputy was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Manhunt Ends in Santa Fe
After several hours of searching, officers found Thompson—still handcuffed—inside a moving vehicle in Santa Fe, Texas.
Two Others Arrested for Assisting
Authorities charged the vehicle’s driver, 32-year-old Captain Ferrel Lawson, and passenger, 33-year-old Ebonnie Persha Lathon, with hindering apprehension, a third-degree felony. Their bonds were set at $100,000 each.
